China has a diverse landscape and offers visitors wide and varied sights to see. However, there are four ancient cities which are recognised as providing some of the most authentic and historical views of China’s past.
Lijiang, Huizhou, Lang Zhong and Pingyao offer cultural heritage and the chance to glimpse some of the most important dynasties in Chinese history. From architecture to art, culture and customs, here’s what to expect when you visit.
- Lijiang Ancient Town – Yunnan 云南-丽江古城
Designated a World Heritage Site since 1997, Lijiang Old Town in Yunnan was a former stop for traders on the Ancient Tea Horse Road. This led to an influx of different cultures which contributed to the famous blend of architectural styles which are unique to this region.
Head to the Baisha Quarter and the Shuhe District to see the oldest buildings and traditional decorations, or Dayan Old Town for quaint cobbled streets and stunning views across the whole area.
- Huizhou Ancient Town – Anhui 安徽-徽州古城
Huizhou Ancient Town is also known as the Exhibition of Huizhou Culture because of its charm, beauty and preservation of national heritage. Wander the winding streets to visit old teahouses, theatres, stone archways and much more.
Dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties, this town is like taking a step into China’s past, with exquisite carvings and elegant buildings offering romantic grandeur.
- Lang Zhong Ancient Town – Sichuan 四川-阆中古城
The Fengshui Museum along with Zhang Fei Temple and Sichuan Examination House are just some of the highlights of the trip to Lang Zhong. The town often referred to as Langzhong Fairyland and offers a magical landscape which is breathtaking.
It’s full of history too, with Lang Zhong being a major military and governance centre for Sichuan for many centuries. King Liu Bei’s brother was garrisoned in Lang Zhong for 7 years before being buried in the town. With original architecture, dramatic mountains and a rich sense of history, it’s an enchanting place.
- Pingyao Ancient Town – Shanxi 山西-平遥古城
Unlike some of the other four ancient cities, Pingyao doesn’t offer the beauty of a green landscape but instead has some of the best-preserved features of any ancient Chinese city. From the city wall which resembles a turtle when seen from above to Ming-Qing Street where you can view ancient buildings and buy traditional snacks and souvenirs, there’s plenty of fascinating sights in this historic corner of China.
